Joint Health Basics

Where would we be without our joints! They serve as links between our bones, and control almost every body movement. Some joints provide stability, others provide mobility, but most joints do both. Joint health should be a priority no matter how old you are.

Importance of Healthy Cartilage

Cartilage is a thin, elastic tissue that protects the bone and makes it possible for the joint surfaces to slide easily over each other. It also serves as a shock-absorber and lubricates the joint to allow for seamless motion. Unfortunately, cartilage has a limited capacity to repair itself from the wear and tear of daily activity.

Did You Know?

  • The bones of kids and teens contain "growing zones" called growth plates.
  • Articular cartilage is composed of 65 to 80% water.
  • Cartilage is filled with chondroitin molecules that play an important role in cushioning.
  • There are more than 780,000 total joint replacement procedures performed in the U.S each year.
  • Joints need some physical load, such as gravity, to maintain proper integrity.
  • Some 27 million Americans have osteoarthritis.
  • The Arthritis Foundation now recognizes over 100 different forms of arthritis.
